Big River Steel, to be located in Osceola, Mississippi County Arkansas is expected to create 525 permanent jobs and 2,000 temporary construction jobs at peak. The plant will produce steel for the auto, petroleum and power industries.
Construction start of the $1.1 billion project will be delayed until early 2014. Nucor Steel has challenged the air permit issued for Big River Steel by the state. A hearing is scheduled for March 2014.
John Correnti leads the group of investors that form Big River Steel. Correnti once headed Nucor Steel, a fortune 500 company with approximately 200 other facilities including the two in Mississippi County. Correnti says "the steel mill is going into Osceola."
Mississippi County is located in the northeast corner of the state of Arkansas. The county borders the west bank of the Mississippi river and has easy access to water port facilities and Interstate 55. Osceola, along with Blytheville are the county's major population centers and both are county seats. Osceola is about a one hour drive to the North of Memphis.
